Cold foiling — also called cold foil stamping — transfers a thin metallic film onto a printed substrate using UV-curable adhesive instead of heat. A press prints the adhesive in the exact shape of the decoration, lays a foil web over it, cures the adhesive under UV lamps, then peels the carrier film away. What stays behind is a sharp, mirror-bright metallic image, bonded permanently to the sheet.

How does cold foiling work?

Cold foiling is an inline, sheet-fed or web-fed process built around four steady-state stations:

  1. 1Adhesive printing — A UV-curable adhesive is laid down by a flexo or offset unit in the exact artwork shape. Coat weight is usually 1.5–3 g/m².
  2. 2Foil lamination — The foil web is unwound and pressed against the wet adhesive by a nip roller. Only the areas with adhesive grab the metal layer.
  3. 3UV curing — Lamps (typically mercury or UV-LED at 200–400 mJ/cm²) instantly polymerize the adhesive, locking the foil in place. Industry curing standards are maintained by RadTech, the UV+EB technology association.
  4. 4Web release — The polyester carrier film is peeled away and rewound. The metallic image stays on the sheet, ready for overprinting.

Because there is no heat and no engraved die, plate changes are fast and substrates that would warp under hot stamping — thin films, thermally sensitive papers, foamed PE — run cleanly.

How to apply cold foil step by step

If you are setting up a job from scratch, the order of operations matters. Skipping the substrate test is the most common cause of poor adhesion we see.

  1. 1Substrate check — Confirm the stock has a sealed, low-absorbency surface. Uncoated wood-free papers below 80 g/m² will bleed adhesive and dull the foil.
  2. 2Adhesive selection — Match the adhesive grade to the foil release force and the downstream overprint chemistry. Mismatched chemistries cause "ghost" pinholes.
  3. 3Plate or sleeve prep — Use a high-resolution flexo plate (1.14 mm, 4000 dpi imaging) or an offset blanket designed for cold foil adhesives.
  4. 4Foil tension — Set web tension to 8–15 N depending on foil width. Too loose causes wrinkles; too tight tears at fine detail.
  5. 5UV dose — Verify lamp output with a radiometer at start of shift. Under-curing leaves tacky foil edges; over-curing yellows the adhesive.
  6. 6Press a proof, then a 500-sheet run — Inspect under angled light for pinholes, edge sharpness and adhesion (peel-test with tape).

Why is hot stamping sometimes preferred over cold stamping?

Hot stamping still wins in three specific situations, and we will tell customers this directly:

  • Tactile relief — Hot stamping with a sculpted die produces a sensible emboss in one pass. Cold foil is flat.
  • Coarse, uncoated stocks — On rough kraft or recycled boards, hot foil's heat and pressure burnish the surface and bond cleanly where cold adhesive would dot-gain.
  • Very small luxury runs — Below ~5,000 impressions, the makeready time of a small hot stamping press can be shorter than setting up the cold-foil unit on a large web press.

Cold foiling wins on speed (up to 18,000 sph), ability to overprint with process color, lower energy use, and the ability to decorate heat-sensitive films. Most of our customers run both technologies and choose by job, not by ideology.

Can you do foil stamping at home?

Honest answer: not the same process. Industrial cold foil requires a printing press with a UV unit, foil web feeders and precise web tension control — equipment that starts at six figures.

What hobbyists actually do is one of three things:

  • Toner-reactive foiling — A laminator (around 100°C) bonds foil onto laser-printer toner. This is heat-based, sits closer to hot stamping, and is fine for greeting cards but not packaging.
  • Adhesive-sheet foiling — Pre-applied glue sheets (Minc, Glimmer) plus a heated transfer machine. Same family as above.
  • Manual hot-foil pens — For one-off lettering on leather or cardstock.

None of these produce the mirror-flat, micron-thin, overprintable layer you get from a real cold foil press. If you need that finish, send the job to a converter — that is exactly what they are equipped for.

What is cold foil vs hot foil?

The two technologies share an end goal — a metallic image on a substrate — but they get there very differently:

  • Cold foil uses UV-curable adhesive, no heat, no engraved die. Fast, low setup, easy to overprint, thin (~1 µm) metallized PET layer.
  • Hot foil uses heat (110–150°C) plus pressure on a metal die that doubles as the image carrier. Slower, higher tooling cost, thicker foil layer, can be combined with embossing.

Think of cold foil as "printable metal" and hot foil as "stamped jewelry". Different tools for different briefs. We supply foil for both; what matters is matching the technology to the artwork, the substrate and the run length.

What kind of press is needed for cold foiling?

Cold foiling is always inline with another printing process. The four common configurations are:

  • Sheet-fed offset with cold-foil tower — Most popular for folding cartons. The foil station sits between a coating unit and the offset units, allowing CMYK overprint of the foil for spot-color metallics.
  • Narrow-web flexo press with cold-foil module — Standard for pressure-sensitive labels (wine, spirits, cosmetics). Often runs alongside flexo, screen and digital units.
  • Wide-web flexo or offset for flexible packaging — Used for film substrates where hot stamping is impossible.
  • Digital press with inline cold-foil unit — Newer, designed for short-run personalized packaging.

What are the disadvantages of cold foiling?

We are honest with customers about the limits:

  • Flat finish only — No emboss, no dimensional sculpting in the same pass. If your brief calls for tactile relief, cold foil alone will not deliver it.
  • Adhesive sensitivity to substrate — Uncoated, highly absorbent or contaminated substrates need a primer or a different process.
  • Foil waste on isolated decorations — Because the carrier film moves continuously, isolated small graphics waste foil between hits. Job ganging mitigates this.
  • UV sensitivity — Some food-contact or pharma applications restrict UV-curable chemistries; low-migration adhesives exist but cost more.

Knowing these constraints in advance is what separates a clean first run from a re-quote.

Can you use a regular laminator for cold foiling?

No — and this confuses a lot of people, because the consumer "foiling" laminators sold for crafts use the word interchangeably.

A regular pouch or roll laminator applies heat and pressure to fuse film. Industrial cold foiling applies UV-curable adhesive and a curing dose of UV light. The chemistries, the films and the bond mechanism are different. A laminator cannot cure UV adhesive, and cold-foil web is not designed to be heat-bonded — heat will distort the carrier and dull the metallization.

How we use this in our own production

When we develop a new foil grade, we run it through the same cold-foil sequence above on our pilot line: adhesive coating → lamination → UV cure → release → adhesion and abrasion testing. A grade only ships to customers after it survives a 50,000-impression test run on at least two substrate families. Frequently asked questions

Does cold foil work on plastic film? +

Yes. Cold foiling is the dominant decoration process for PE, PP, BOPP and PET films because there is no heat to distort the substrate. Adhesive choice and corona treatment of the film are the two variables that decide bond strength.

Is cold foil recyclable? +

The metallized layer is roughly 1 µm of aluminum bonded to the substrate via cured adhesive. In paper-stream recycling, the aluminum content is far below the threshold that affects pulp quality. For mono-material packaging recycling streams, look for our recyclable-grade foils that pass standard repulpability tests.

What is the minimum line width cold foiling can hold? +

On a properly maintained press with a 1.14 mm flexo plate, cold foil reliably holds positive lines down to 70 µm and negative lines down to 100 µm. Going finer is possible but requires plate, anilox and adhesive viscosity tuning.

How long does cold foil last on a finished package? +

Indefinitely under normal storage. The metallized layer is sealed by adhesive on one side and overprint or varnish on the other. Accelerated aging (Xenon-arc, 500 h) shows no measurable color shift on our standard gold and silver grades.

Do you need a primer under cold foil? +

Only on uncoated or highly absorbent substrates. On standard coated paper, SBS board and PE/PET films, the UV adhesive is the primer. We supply primer recommendations with each foil grade's technical data sheet.
