Cold foil selection comes down to four decisions: what the packaging is for, what it prints on, how it prints, and what a physical sample tells you before you commit to a production run.
Wine labels often need Champagne, Pale Gold or Silver for a refined shelf presence. Cosmetics packaging usually calls for Bright Gold, Rose Gold, Holographic or Iridescent Pearl. Pharma packaging may need Silver or Holographic for security effects and clean overprint. Confectionery and FMCG lean on Bright Gold, Copper and Matte Black. Coated paper and carton board accept nearly every foil in the range. Wine label paper needs a softer finish and adjusted adhesive coat weight. UV flexo and narrow-web label presses handle Silver, Bright Gold, Rose Gold and Matte Black at speed. Sheetfed offset and folding carton lines run the full ten-foil range. Carton board and folding cartons may need sheetfed offset compatibility review — talk to prepress about plate durometer, adhesive coat weight and UV lamp calibration.
