Cold stamping foil is a metallic or holographic film transferred onto a printed substrate using UV-curable adhesive instead of heat and pressure. On a press, the adhesive is printed in the exact shape of the decoration, the foil web is laid down over it, the adhesive is cured under UV lamps, and the carrier film is peeled away — leaving a sharp, mirror-bright image bonded to the sheet.

How does cold stamping work?
Cold stamping is an inline decoration process built around four steps:
- 1Adhesive application. A UV-curable adhesive is printed in the artwork shape using a flexo, offset or rotary screen unit.
- 2Foil lay-down. The foil web is brought into contact with the wet adhesive under a nip roller. There is no heated die — only the contact pressure of the nip.
- 3UV curing. A UV lamp cures the adhesive through the back of the carrier (the foil itself is engineered to let enough UV through to crosslink the bond).
- 4Carrier release. The PET carrier is peeled away. The metallised release layer stays only where adhesive was printed.
Because the image is defined by the printed adhesive — not by an etched die — a single foil web can decorate any artwork the press can print. Plate changes replace die changes.
How does foil stamping work in general?
"Foil stamping" is an umbrella term for two very different families:
- Hot stamping uses a heated metal or silicone die to press a foil into a substrate. The die both shapes the image and supplies the heat that activates the foil's release and adhesive layers.
- Cold stamping uses printed UV adhesive plus a nip and UV lamp, with no heat and no die. The press itself becomes the decoration tool.
Both methods transfer a thin metallised layer (typically aluminium, sometimes with a holographic emboss) from a PET carrier to the substrate. The difference is how that transfer is triggered.
How to apply cold foil
On a sheet-fed offset or flexo press, a typical cold-foil unit is added between the first and second printing stations. The practical setup looks like this:
- Print the adhesive on the first unit using a dedicated UV cold-foil adhesive (these are formulated for fast wet-on-wet tack and for crosslinking through the foil).
- Run the foil web at a controlled tension over the impression cylinder so it meets the sheet at the nip.
- Cure under a medium-pressure mercury or UV-LED lamp sized for your line speed and adhesive chemistry.
- Continue printing colours over the foil in the remaining units. This is the real reason people switch to cold foil: you can overprint process inks on top of a mirror surface to create custom metallic colours from a single silver foil.
For label presses, the same logic applies but the foil unit is usually a dedicated module between the flexo stations.
How to do foil stamping at home
Home and craft "foiling" is a different process from industrial cold stamping, even though it shares the name. Hobbyists generally use one of three methods:
- Toner-reactive foil with a laminator: print the design on a laser printer, place the foil over the toner, and run the sheet through a hot pouch laminator. The toner re-melts and grabs the foil.
- Adhesive-pen foiling: draw with a glue pen, let it become tacky, then press the foil down by hand.
- Heat-press machines (Minc, Foil Quill and similar) that combine the laminator and applicator into one device.
These tools use the same physical foil structure as industrial rolls, but they are not a substitute for a press-mounted cold-foil unit. If you are evaluating decoration for a real product run, talk to a converter rather than scaling up a craft method.
What is cold foil vs. foil?
"Foil" by itself usually refers to the consumable — the metallised PET web that carries the decorative layer. "Cold foil" describes that web plus the application method (UV adhesive, no heat). In a buyer's spec sheet, the distinctions that actually matter are:
- Carrier: PET thickness (commonly 12 µm).
- Release system: tuned for cold (UV adhesive) or hot (heated die) processes — they are not interchangeable.
- Metallisation: vacuum-deposited aluminium, sometimes with a holographic embossed pattern.
- Top coat: determines overprintability, scratch resistance and chemical resistance.
If a roll is labelled "cold foil," it has been engineered so the release layer breaks at room temperature under UV-cured adhesive. Trying to run hot-stamping foil through a cold-foil unit (or vice versa) is the single most common source of "the foil isn't transferring" support calls we receive.
Why is hot stamping sometimes better than cold stamping?
Cold stamping is faster, more flexible and friendlier to fine detail, but hot stamping still wins in three situations:
- Heavy textured stocks. On uncoated boards or deeply embossed substrates, a heated die can press the foil into the surface in a way a flat nip cannot.
- Sculptural or combination embossing. When the decoration must be foiled and embossed in a single pass with crisp 3D relief, that is hot-stamping territory.
- Very small runs of a fixed image. If you only ever produce one design and the volumes are low, the consumable cost of a hot-stamping die can be lower than setting up a cold-foil unit.
For everything else — variable artwork, overprinting, fine type, long runs at high speed — cold stamping usually wins on total cost.
Can you use a normal laminator for foiling?
You can use a standard pouch laminator for toner-reactive craft foiling, but not for industrial cold stamping. The two processes look superficially similar (a roll of foil, a nip, a substrate) but they rely on different physics:
- A laminator uses heat to melt toner so it acts as the adhesive.
- A cold-foil press uses a UV-curable liquid adhesive printed in the artwork shape, cured by a UV lamp.
If you try to run cold-foil rolls through a laminator without printed UV adhesive, nothing will transfer. If you try to run hot-stamping foil through a cold-foil press, you will get patchy release and contamination. Match the foil chemistry to the process.
Why wrap your doorknob in aluminium foil at night?
This question has nothing to do with industrial cold stamping — it is a viral home-security trick that suggests wrapping a doorknob in aluminium foil makes it harder to pick. We include it here because we get the search query.
For decoration purposes, the only thing the two share is the word "foil." Household aluminium foil is roughly 11–18 µm of pure aluminium with no carrier, no release layer, no top coat and no UV-reactive adhesive system. It cannot be transferred onto packaging by any cold-stamping press.
How does cold stamping work?
After hundreds of plant visits, we use a simple checklist when converters ask whether to switch from hot to cold:
- The artwork changes job to job.
- You want to overprint process colours on the metallic to create custom shades.
- You need fine type or hairline rules in foil.
- You are running at full press speed and downtime for die changes is hurting throughput.
- Your substrate is a smooth coated board, paper or film — not a deeply textured uncoated stock.
